High Wind Watch

  • Statement as of 3:22 am PDT on May 16, 2012

... High wind watch in effect from Thursday afternoon through
    Thursday evening...

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a high wind
watch for the eastern Sierra slopes and the western portion of the
Owens Valley... which is in effect from Thursday afternoon through
    Thursday evening.

    * Winds: southwest to west winds may form between 20 and 30 mph
with gusts to between 60 and 70 mph.

    * Timing: winds will increase late Thursday morning with the
potential for the strongest downslope winds being late Thursday
    afternoon through Thursday evening.

    * Locations: the east slopes of the southern Sierra... including
Highway 168 and mainly the western foothills of the Owens Valley
especially near canyon openings... as well as portions of Highway
    395.

    * Impacts: strong Crosswinds may be seen on Highway 395 making
driving difficult if not impossible. In addition areas of
blowing sand and dust may rapidly lower visibilities to near
    zero.

    Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous high
wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph and... or gusts of
58 mph or stronger may occur in the watch area. Continue to monitor
    forecasts for the latest information.
